The Teacup Chihuahua features in the top 10 of all small dog breeds for popularity. However, this tiny tot can be a terror if not handled correctly. 

So when choosing a dog please consider the following:  These miniature dogs can snap if startled or teased.  They guard their food and toys jealously and are therefore  not suitable for young children.   It is essential that they are guided by a firm hand and must be taught, their owner is the pack leader, early on or you will have a tough time controlling the adult dog.  If they are treated like an intelligent dog
and not a helpless baby they are more confident and are better behaved.

On a positive note, these cute dogs, make an excellent apartment pet, and can be trained to use a litter box like a cat.  They are mistrustful of strangers and make excellent alert dogs.  They bond very strongly with one owner and are therefore ideal for the elderly.  Naturally due to their petite size they very portable and can be taken anywhere with ease.  The smooth coated needs a weekly brush , the long coated (a rarer variety) needs an additional brushing each week.

As with most small dog breeds, they are prone to a number of illnesses. 

These cutie pies must be fed dry kibble and not be fed canned foods as they are prone to tooth decay and gum disease.  Treats should be in the form of teeth cleaning products.  Some of these small dog breeds have a "molera" an unclosed section of the skull which remains open for life, making the dog prone to injury and requires special handling. Caesarian birth is common. As always Pet Insurance is recommended to cover the Veterinary Bills.

Their widely spaced eyes and relatively large ears on their tiny frames are their most noticeable features. These cute dogs don’t like wet or cold weather. A perfect companion,these small dog breeds will not tolerate other breeds of dogs, but are accepting of other Chihuahua dogs.
