Scottish Terrier
 King of the Highlands

The Scottish Terrier is sturdy, strong and robust and is devoted to those he loves.

Generally a healthy dog breed as there are few related health issues with these small dog breeds.

Most small dog breeds are considered lap dogs, the Scottie does not share this reputation. In fact individual dogs can be quite "dour and crusty" although all are territorial and make devoted family guard dogs.

Scottish Terrier

Scottish Terriers can be left alone, unlike many of our little angels.  However, no dog should be abandoned all day, every day.

  • Weight - 18 - 23 lbs (8.5 - 10.5 kgs)
  • Height - 10 - 11 inchs (25 - 28 cms)
  • Color - Black, wheaten or brindle in any color.
  • Coat - Dense undercoat, wiry outercoat.  Weather resistant.  Low shedding between seasons.
  • Maintenance - regular brushing, professional stripping or home clipping.
  • Family - Ideal as a family pet, although  can be a bit snappy with other dogs.
  • Life expectancy - 12 years or longer.
  • Personality - Sturdy, self confident and independent.  A fabulous guard dog and reliable family pet.  Stubborn if pushed in training. If you don't want a handful you need to establish training early.

The Scottie is not prone to dog separation anxiety as long as he gets a daily walk together with positive and consistent training from an early age.

These miniature dogs stand less than a foot high but are renowned for their protective abilities and independence.  A large dog in a small body typifies these terriers of Scotland.  Unusual small dog breeds in that they are not overly dependent on their owner, particularly if well socialized.

A Scot through and through in stature and demeanour. A sense of humor is required when training as they may well try to train you!  The terrier in him will rear its stubborn head as he can be assertive if pushed or badly handled.  He cannot swim and must be protected from open water as his heavy coat and short legs are not designed for swimming.

These miniature dogs are distinctive in looks and distinctive in it's health issues.  Prone to a particular condition, Scottie Cramp, known only in these miniature dogs.  Also prone to skin irritations, Omega oils are essential in their diet.  A painful jaw condition is another health condition which fortunately dissipates as the dog ages (about one year).  The treatment is soft food and anti inflammatory medication.

A good all rounder for a family.
