Training a puppy takes time, patience and determination on the owners part, but the reward is a well behaved, well balanced dog that becomes part of the family. A pet that can be taken anywhere, will not cause havoc in the owners' absence. You will reap the rewards of total enjoyment of your new pet.

Your dog does not know how to act in the human world and will look to you to know how to behave. All your little pooch wants is to please you and cannot be expected to guess what to do and what not to do.

Key to successful training a puppy, is in the tone of your voice. All dog lovers talk to their
beloved pets constantly, but for training and bonding purposes, you would have three main tones:

• The Command Tone, a clear strong tone used to get his immediate attention;
• The Praise Tone, a happy one used for reward; and,
• The Corrective Tone a very low voice used for correcting bad behavior.

  Another key ingredient, in successfully training a puppy, is timing. Your dog will not connect any form of punishment to his behavior from 5 minutes ago.

  Small dog breeds are notoriously more difficult to house train, but this does not mean they are not trainable, it simply means that you may need to be a bit more diligent when your puppy is being trained.

  Some types of dog breeds, are naturally easier to train than others but all dogs will respond successfully to repeated training that does not deviate.

  You have to follow through on all training.

  You cannot be contradictory to your verbal command. If you say "No!", but actually think that your pet was adorable when he was chewing up your favorite sweater, he is going to know it and will not take you seriously when you reprimand him.

  The Boy Scouts of America have added the Canine Good Citizen test to their Boy Scouts Dog Care merit badge. Consider these 10 exercises in order to qualify your dog as a well behaved and sociable creature.
