Strongly independent, this rare dog breed,, is not to be messed with. He makes a good small guard dog. He is fearless and highly energetic. This monkey, however, can be highly strung and some Affens tremble a lot. Affenpinscher Grooming is not too time consuming, regular brushing and monthly trimming of his cute whiskers and hair around eye area. Twice annually, professional grooming is required. He has a short, harsh and wiry coat which is low shedding. The preferred color is black but black and tan, gray or red is occasionally seen. The Affenpincher health problems are mostly related to Brachycepahlic dog breeds general health issues, short snouted but Oh! so very cute little faces. They don't have many health issues besides the breathing condition common in this type of dog breed as well as eye ulcers not unusual with the shallow eye socket which forces the eye ball to be more exposed.
All of these types of small dog breeds, (pushed up faces) need extra special care in extreme weather conditions be it hot or cold. Naturally all toy dog breeds should be kenneled indoors, preferably in your bed. They do not have the personality or coats to be left alone in the outdoors to fend for themselves. Human companionship is very much part of their general well being. Left alone for long periods of time the Affenpincher breed type of personality will result in Dog Separation Anxiety. Not because they are been naughty, simply because they love you so much and depend on you to an extreme level.
If choosing this tiny, sweetheart be prepared to be the focus of their attention and you in turn will benefit from a devoted, if demanding lap dog, which should not be spoilt.
This toy is the most desirable if you need some alarm and fierce protection, albeit from a tiny tot. Not usually noisy, but fearless, when he thinks his family is under threat. This toy terrier is rare dog breed and is growing in popularity, very suitable for small apartments and single families, but can be a huge personality in a family with children, provided small children know and respect all the aspects of a fragile frame, and pack dog mentality. You are the leader and if you enforce this pack status, your Affenpincher can thrive with a family with children.
