Affenpinscher dog
A Monkey Faced Terrier

Affenpinscher dog is strong willed. He needs a very firm hand when training. Not a breed for a novice owner.

Affenpinscher dog

This little devil, needs to be protected from the cold and damp as his respiratory system is delicate.

The Affenpinscher Dog should not be allowed to jump off high furniture as he is prone to fractures to his slight frame.

History

He originated in Germany, records go back to the 17th Century.  He was bred as a ratter in and around stables.

Personality Strong mind and very strong willed. This rare dog can be very hard to housebreak and is often noisy.
Appearance His eyes and nose are black.  Usually black coat but black and tan, red and dark grey Affens are permissable. No white markings.
Grooming Bushy eyebrows and beard needs regular clipping and his coat brushed vigorously once or twice a week.  Stripping twice a year.
Health

Slipped stifle (a joint disorder which may need surgery), ulcers on his big eyes, respiratory difficulties and heatstroke are usual with Affenpinscher health associated with this rare dog breed.

Family Very good companion dog, not for young children.  He is known to guard his toys and food and can be snappy.
Training Despite his high intellect he is difficult to train as this is a dog with a mind of its own. Very firm training is required.
Ideal Home Makes a great companion and gets on well with other family pets.  Little exercise is required so an apartment is sufficient as normal play is usually enough.  A regular walk though is always appreciated.
Lifespan 12 - 14 years as with many small dog breeds, if well integrated with a family can live longer.
Purpose Originally a ratter.  Today a companion and pet.
Watch dog Very good alert and watch dog.

Loving Care

Our little pets rely on us for their every need.
They cannot feed themselves as we have bred them to be our companions which they do admirably.  We need to care for them as we would a defenceless baby.
Dog Grooming as well as when they are older
Caring for an older dog
are part and parcel of responsible pet ownership.
