Dachshund
Small in Stature. Fearless by Nature


The Dachshund, comes in two sizes and three coat varieties and colors for both the Standard and Miniature Dachshund.

These small dog breeds are totally German bred, originally as badger hunters and now these types of dogs make a lovable and entertaining pet. These small dog breeds, are lively and make excellent pets with considerate children.

They are energetic and love playing and are constantly on the go. This tiny dog breeds gets destructive without lots of human interaction!.

Miniature Dachshund

 
History Originally bred in the 1500s, as the smooth variety. The longhaired variety made its appearance in the seventeenth centrury. The Wirehaired in the late nineteenth century.
Personality The Dachsund is not always known for a good disposition.  Can be strong mined and can be snappy and noisy. Energetic and brave.
Appearance Smooth, Longhaired and Wirehaired. In many colors, Solid red, golden red and golden.  Two colors usually black, brown gray with white on extremities. Dapple and the Wirehaired also recognized in brindle. 
Grooming Smooth haired, just needs an occasional chamois wiped over the short shiny coat. The Longhaired and Wirehaired variety of these small dog breeds need daily brushing and a bath if necessary.  Wirehaired need hand stripping 3 to 4 times a year.
Health

Very susceptible to spinal problems and some skin conditions and heart disease in old age.  These small dog breeds must not be allowed to climb stairs or furniture on a regular basis.

Family Very good companion dog, not for young children.  He is known to guard his toys and food and can be snappy.  The wirehaired variety is considered the calmest of the 3 types.
Training Relatively easy to train as this is an intelligent breed, can be headstrong and does need a firm hand.
Ideal Home Makes a great family pet but can be difficult with other dogs.  Can suit apartment living provided regular daily exercise is offered to maintain mental health and release energy.  Smoothhaired must be housed indoors particularly in cold climates.  All these types of dogs, however, will be happier in the home and part of the family.
Lifespan 14 - 17 years.
Purpose Originally a ratter.  Today a companion and pet.
