Griffon Bruxellois Dynamite in a Small Package
The Griffon Bruxellois (AKA Brussels Griffon) is commonly mis-spelt due to the variation of the dogs' profile name. Over the years it has been translated from Bruxellois Griffon to Belgian Griffon and finally more commonly the Brussels Griffon.
This cheeky little fellow is, ideally, a one person dog. Famously portrayed in "As good as it gets". This little baby stole the show by creeping into the steely, resistant heart of the character played by Jack Nicholson. Its monkey like face makes it the most human looking of all toy dog breeds and its' terrier personality makes it an entertaining companion, very alert and watchful.
Dog grooming care must be a consideration with the Griffon Bruxellois, which needs daily brushing (particularly the rough coat) and the whiskers and eye area folds needs careful and regular washing.
The rough coat also needs 4 times a year stripping, which for a household pet, can just be normal trimming, stripping being a requirement for show dogs. The smooth coat (Petit Brabacon) needs regular brushing, no clipping, which may be an option for those with less time on their hands. However, in every other way the personality and breed characteristics remain unchanged. The cute, short snout, which makes these toy dog breeds, physically appealing to humans, brings with it some health concerns and a noisy partner. Wheezing and snoring are all common in this type of dog breed. As with all types of dog breeds, specifically the brachycephalic dogs some health issues have to be a consideration, due to cost of veterinarian care and costs and also distress caused by some illnesses.
This is an independent, lively breed which enjoys a good walk on hard surfaces. A walk made up of a good hour or so is required to maintain good muscle tone. The Griffon Bruxellois was originally bred as vermin exterminator, this little baby must have some daily exercise to eliminate the build up of excitement which can make this little one quite a handful.
Provided it gets a long daily walk, this sweetie pie is suitable for the elderly, however, this entertaining and energetic little dog can and often is a loving pet for a larger family with older children. Small children must, as always, be well trained to treat any small dog breed with a great deal of respect, particularly as their little frames are fragile.
As with many types of toy dogs, this breed of dog should not be kenneled outdoors. They need a lot of human interaction, and their coats are not ideal for frosty nights and days Nor does,
Brachycephalic Dog Breeds
(short snouted, little dog breeds) do well in the heat of a hot day. Their breathing is naturally labored and worsened by excessive heat. These angels are known to guard their toys and are potentially hard to housebreak. A firm hand by the pack leader, you the owner, is a necessity. Pack Behavior training is essential.
