This highly intelligent lap dog has a relatively short life expectancy compared to other small dog breeds. These toy dog breeds are an instinctively intelligent breed, is not noisy and has a happy temperament. These small dog breeds are highly suitable for the elderly as they enjoy play but are not too energetic or too boisterous.
These particular small dog breeds have long, silky and profuse coats which needs regularly brushing but are not considered high maintenance dogs as their exercise requirements are minimal. The Japanese Spaniel is a naturally clean dog and is ideal for the elderly or small family with older children. The Japanese Spaniel (as it was originally known) is not aggressive but makes a keen watchdog as this little lap dog seems to intuitively assess strangers. These small dog breeds generally bond with one person but gets on well with other family pets.
These toy dog breeds are less than one foot high, and makes a fabulous lap warmer. Japanese Chins were presented to Queen Victoria in 1853 and became a popular Royal Lap Dog, and it enjoyed similar status in the Japanese Royal Court. These little tots were exclusively bred as human companions and in Ancient Japan were sometimes kept in hanging birdcages, naturally nowadays this would be considered extreme cruelty. As with all tiny dog breeds, lack of exercise and human snacks will easily and quickly result in an overweight dog. Although this breed is not prone to obesity, care should be taken not tooverfeed this little bundle. Respiratory problems, patellar luxation and sensitivity to anesthesia are the main health concerns as experienced with many Brachycephalic dog breeds
