Japanese Spaniel

The Japanese Spaniel is better known as the Japanese Chin.  These types of dogs can be aloof to strangers, as a result make fine watchdogs

These particular small dog breeds have long, silky and profuse coats which needs regularly brushing but are not considered high maintenance dogs as their exercise requirements are minimal.

The Japanese Chin is a naturally clean dog and is ideal for the elderly or small family with older children.


 
History

Believed to have been in existence 520 AD making this one of the oldest type of dog breed.  The Japanese Spaniel, was bred purely as a companion.  No history of working or any other purpose than as a lap dog.  The more commonly accepted name is the Japanese Chin, but comes from China.

Personality These pint sized types of dogs are happy and devoted pets.  They do not demand attention but do bond with one family member.  These small dogs are devoted companions and can be used as therapy dogs due to their high intelligence and trainability.
Appearance Profuse long and silky white coat with patches of black but also red, lemon or orange.  If he has black patches his nose must be black.  A breed characteristic is small amount of white in the inner eye corner giving these types of dogs a look of astonishment.
Grooming The long single coat does not moult excessively and needs brushing 2 or 3 times a week.  The Japanese Chin is a naturally clean dog and needs minimal grooming other than brushing of his beautiful coat.
Health

This Brachycephalic dog breed have the usual problems associated with snub nosed dogs such as breathing difficulties and sensitivity to anesthesia.  In additional patellar luxation and mitral valve insufficiency is prevalent.  These types of dogs have a relatively short life span of just 12 years.

Family Very good companion dog, not suitable for families with boisterous children.  He is gentle and gets on well with other family pets.
Training The Japanese Spaniel is easy to train as it is intelligent and calm.  They have been known to create their own tricks and are popular as therapy dogs.
Ideal Home Highly suitable for apartment living as this is an undemanding dog breeds, needing companionship and not much else.  However, in-door kenneling is absolutely essential as they cannot tolerate extreme temperatures be it hot or cold.
Lifespan 12 - 14 years, making this a small dog breed with one of the shortest lifespan.
Purpose Bred entirely as a companion dog breed.
Watch dog Good alert dog.  These types of dogs are aloof and suspicious of strangers.

These little tots were bred exclusively as human companions and in Ancient Japan were sometimes kept in hanging birdcages. Nowadays this would be considered extreme cruelty.
