Miniature Schnauzer
Guard Dog and Lap Dog

The Miniature Schnauzer is an all rounder, perfect as one of our adorable lap dogs, and an excellent watch dog too.  This truly beautiful and distincitve dog breed has been around for over 200 years, originating in Germany as a ratter.  Nowadays, this low shedding dog is bred purely as a family pet or as small companion dogs for the elderly or those in apartments.

Small Companion Dogs
  • Weight - (9 - 15.5 lbs) 4 - 7kg
  • Height - 12 - 14 inches (30 - 35 cms)
  • Color - Black, Salt and Pepper. No white markings except a spot of white on the chest of Black.
  • Coat - Hard, wiry and thick
  • Maintenance - Daily bushing and regular grooming.
  • Family - Very devoted and loves children.
  • Life expectancy - 12 - 14 years
  • Personality - Alert, affectionate and territorial. These types of dogs are lap dogs recommended as tiny guard dogs.

The Schnauzer is one of healthy dog breeds, but naturally as with all types of dogs, has some health issues.  Von Willebrands (a bleeding disorder) similar to hemophilia in humans.  Pancreatitis is another possible complication with these lap dogs and can be controlled with a healthy, low fat diet, no human table snacks allowed!  Diabetes and some eye problems are also prevalent.  Skin allergies can be common with some individual Miniature Schnauzers.

They are biddable and want to please their beloved owner, but can challenge a weak pack leader.  You need to establish pack behavior leadership and you will be rewarded with a well balanced, happy and entertaining companion.

A good daily walk is essential though for this energetic little tot. They also need indoor kenelling particularly when clipped. This little sweetie should sleep inside with their doting family.

One of the characteristics of these small dog breeds, is their apparent sense of humor and their willingness to please.  These small dog breeds are easy to train and are not generally neurotic as many of our sweet little lap dogs can be.

The little Schnauzer is a gorgeous and lively companion, suitable for the family young and old.  He loves attention and will reward you with his devotion in return.
