Naturally as with most small dog breeds the Pekinese needs to be kennelled indoors preferably on your bed! Human companionship is very much part of their general well being and do not enjoy being left alone for long periods of time. The Peke is heavier than he looks (a breed necessity), and unusually the male dogs are smaller than bitches. As with some lap dogs this one is a challenge to house train, and needs some determination on the owners part.
These types of dogs are known to be aloof and are not friendly to strangers. These small dog breeds are generally alert and will let you know when someone has arrived at your front door.
When choosing this tiny tot be prepared to be the focus of their attention and you in turn will benefit from an exceptionally devoted, lap dog. These small dog breeds can be a bit noisy and is fearless, when he thinks his family is under threat. Moderate daily exercise is always recommended but is not essential for this pooch if the owner is elderly or unable to do a daily walk. As with most small dog breeds, just being the centre of your attention and pampered is all these little angels want and need.
Some health considerations when deciding on the Pekingese breed of dog. Umbilical hernia, breathing and eye problems, ear infections, arthritis and skin allergies amongst other (non deadly) illnesses. But do not be put off by this, all breeds of dogs have some health issues and that is part and parcel of owning any dog, no matter what size or breed. Pet Insurance is highly recommended for all breeds of dogs to ensure that you are able to get Veterinarian care when you need it without concerning yourself about the bill.
