| History | Established as an official breed in the Flemish provinces of Belgium, possibly descended from the small sheepdog, the Leauvenaar. The Schipperke dog is not well known outside of Belgium but in England its popularity is rising. Originally used as a vermin catcher and guard dog of barges, today it is a popular small companion dog breed. |
Personality | These distinctive dogs are very devoted to their family and can be protective over their toys. Schipperke dogs are fierce and independent, mischievious, joyful and wilful. They can challenge their owner and have a mind of their own. Obedience classes are recommend. | | Appearance | A unique silhouette, sloping neck with a thick, abundant and harsh black coat. These Skipperke dogs have a thick ruff from ears to around the neck. Coat stands proud of the body. Black from tip of his nose to the nails on his feet is a breed standard. |
| Grooming | The softer undercoat sheds several times a year. To assist with the shedding process, warm baths are recommended. When not shedding, occasional bath and weekly brush is all that is required. This natural coat of different lengths, must not be cut or stripped. Possibly trim the hair between feet pads. |
| Health | The Schipperke dog breed is a healthy breed, however, some eye problems and hypothyroidism (symptoms are weight gain, depression and fatigue). |
Family | Very good family pet, prone to high pitched barking. A fabulous companion dog, suitable for families with children, but he can be snappish if not well trained. He does not like strangers. He loves to play with other family pets. | | Training | The Schipperke breed can be resistant to housetraining although excels at agility. Firm training is needed. |
| Ideal Home | Highly suitable for apartment living as this breed has a low level of exercise required. This is one of our small dog breeds that adapts well to cold climates and can tolerate being kenneled outside. |
| Lifespan | 14 - 16 many even make 20. This can be consideration when committing to a puppy. This tiny little dog has one of the longest lifespans. |
| Purpose | Bred entirely as a companion but originally trained as a guard dog and vermin eradicator. |
| Watch dog | The best small dog breeds as a guard dog. Is very suspicious of strangers and has a high piercing bark. |
