Schipperke
Little Flemish Captain

The Schipperke is often born tailless and must be solid black in color.  In some countries some other solid colors (Cream)are allowed, but the AKC todate have not accepted this.

Schipperke

  • Weight - 6.5 to 18 lbs (3 - 8 kgs
  • Height - 12.5 - 14 inches (22 - 33 cms)
  • Color - Solid black
  • Coat - Dense and harsh
  • Maintenance -Regular brushing
  • Family - Gentle with children, needs training or can be snappish.
  • Life expectancy - 14- 16 years or longer.
  • Personality - Can be snappish with his food and toys. Otherwise a devoted family pet. A fine watch dog.  For families who need an alarm dog in the form of one of the small dog breeds.
  • The Skipperke is a rare dog breed in USA but not so in Europe.

This short and thickset "little devil dog", as it is often referred to, has a piercing bark at the slightest provocation.  Barking must be controlled early on and firm training is required with this independent type of dog.

The Skipperke dog breed is well known for its longevity and these small dog breeds have been known to reach 20 years, something to consider when purchasing a puppy.  This particular breed though, has low exercise requirements, making it ideal for apartment living.

The Skipperke is curious, interested in everything around him, and is a fine and faithful watchdog, inspite of its diminutive height.  The Skipperke dog is reserved with strangers and will protect his family and property.  This is a confident and independent breed, reflecting the breed's original purpose as watchdog and vermin hunter.

This dog breed is known as an excellent agility competitor well into his teens.  He can be protective over his food and toys and could be snappish if not trained properly.

The thick harsh coat which stands away from the body has a soft undercoat which sheds heavily several times a year.  Grooming requirements are minimal, with just a weekly brush to its coat of many lengths.  The coat must not be trimmed or cut.
