During the Chinese Revolution, this exquisite dog breed, was almost wiped out, just 7 males and 7 females survived. All Shih Tzu dogs, can be traced back to these few pairs.

This "Tibetan Lion dog", suffers from Dog Separation Anxiety when left alone.  These small companion dogs, need to have a doting human caring for its every need.  Daily brushing and monthly bathing or professional grooming is critical to prevent their double coat from matting, causing skin problems.  Neglect can cause the coat to mat, creating a hot bed for bacteria to thrive.

Housetraining is challenging as these small dog breeds, have a mind of their own, and this haughty tot wants to be treated gently.  Any harsh words will have your dog sulking and ignoring you.  These gorgeous dogs, are easily spoilt. You must avoid feeding this little tot human snacks, as they tend to put on weight as well as suffer from tooth decay.

The Chrysanthemum-faced dog was cherished by Chinese royals as prized house pets for over a thousand years, it is believe to have descended from crossing the Lhaso Apso and the Pekingese. Soldiers brought this breed to USA after World War 2.

The Shih Tzu dog is not suitable with children.  These small dog breeds are inclined to be snappy and do not tolerate children well.  They need doting parents who have time to groom and love them.  A Shih Tsu does not need much exercise and are suitable for apartment living, but they do love playing.  Their longer than tall bodies are not meant for strenuous exercising or long walks.

Thes gorgeous dogs are a healthy breed with only one major health concern.  Renal Dysplasia is a very serious kidney, development disorder affecting puppies and young dogs, unfortunately this ailment is usually terminal. It is strongly recommended that you check out both parents for any possible connection to this breed specific disease.
