Yorkshire Terriers, are known for their beautiful silky, long coats. They are ideal of the many toy dog breeds to be your baby to love, groom and pamper.

The grooming of your dog requires daily brushing and monthly clipping to keep it in tip top shape. These little terriers do not shed, making it ideal for easy home maintenance. 

These miniature dogs  are extremely decorative and are world-renowned for being "dressed up".  Their forehead hair should always be tied up in a colorful bow or decorative accessory.   Their diminutive size hides a feisty personality. This little terrier is not scared of the dark


This little baby makes the perfect fashion statement when shopping and travelling. These little lap dogs enjoy being a pampered pet and can be jealous of attention given to anything other than themselves. Their huge egos are what makes them such a delightful pet for couples or single people.

They are not the best of toy dog breeds for boisterous children but can be a family pet with older children.




History Yorkshire Terrier dogs were originally bred in the North of England in the mid nineteenth century to catch rats in mines. 
Personality This little beauty is lively and affectionate, loves to be loved and has a dominant personality.  Get ready to pay attention to this little dynamite of toy dog breeds.
Appearance Very long straight silky coats in dark steel, mixed with fawn. Puppies are born black.
Grooming Regular brushing and monthly professional grooming your dog is required. Does not moult.
Health The most common problems with these toy dog breeds is Portosystemic shunts (a liver problem) and Hypothyriodism (a thyroid gland condition).  These present in the older dog.
Family These precious little dogs are ideal as lap dogs and are not intended for boisterous children.  Perfect for lot of love and attention with a single person or elderly couple.
Training Firm training is required as they can be yappers. They are highly intelligent, so whilst it may take a while they can be trained to be obedient and will reward you with a loving personality.
Ideal Home As many of the small dog breeds this one is suitable for apartment living but do need daily exercise.
Lifespan Up to 14 years with good quality food.
Purpose Originally bred for rat catching, but modern Yorkshire Terriers are intended as lap dogs and a fashion accessory.
Watch dog This toy dog breed is a very good alert animal but may need a firm hand to control barking.
